Kendenup is approximately 20 kms north of Mount Barker. The town has an interesting history, beautiful undulating country, and magnificent wildflowers in Spring. Kendenup was originally purchased in 1840 by Captain John Hassell for development as a sheep station. The actual town site was established in 1920 and is now enjoying another boom as people from the city move to the country to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle. This area has also seen a huge apple and vegetable industry grow and die, and is now seeing another change as vineyards are established. The more traditional farms still grow wheat, canola, barley, oats maize, and cattle and sheep for meat and wool. ATTRACTIONS There is an old bulldozer that dates from the 1940s that has been restored and is on display in Hassell Avenue, opposite the General Store. This bulldozer was instrumental in helping to clear land and build dams for the region. The local community decided to purchase this bulldozer when it came up for auction in 1998, as a memento of the pioneers who established the community. WILDFLOWERS SHOPPING AND AMENITIES Public toilets are available at the back of the shire hall on Hassell Avenue. |
